FAQ
Questions, answered plainly.
A few of the things people often wonder about before reaching out. If your question is not here, please ask.
Do I need a referral to start?
No. You do not need a referral from a doctor or anyone else. You can reach out directly, and we will take it from there.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. What you share in counselling stays private, with a few specific legal and safety exceptions that I will explain clearly at the start. Those exceptions exist to keep people safe, and I will always be upfront with you about them.
What happens in a first session?
The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. There is no pressure to tell your whole story or arrive with a clear goal. We will talk about what brought you in, what you are hoping for, and whether working together feels like a good fit. You set the pace.
Do you work with teens without parents present?
Often, yes. Teens frequently do their best work in a space that is genuinely their own, while parents stay informed and involved in age-appropriate ways. We will discuss confidentiality and communication openly so everyone knows what to expect.
How long is each session?
Sessions are 50 minutes. If a longer format would be helpful, for example a family session, we can talk about what makes sense.
Do you offer in-person or virtual sessions?
Both. In-person sessions are offered through Island Clinical Counselling, in Downtown Nanaimo on Wednesdays, North Nanaimo on Thursdays, and Port Alberni on Tuesdays. Virtual sessions by secure video are available across British Columbia. Many people mix the two depending on their week.
How do I pay, and is it covered by insurance?
Payment is by e-transfer or credit card at the time of each session. Sessions are not yet eligible for extended health benefit reimbursement, since Johann is still completing the CCC and RCC designations (both expected later this year or early next year). In the meantime, clients can often claim through the Autism Funding Unit, Community Living BC, and other applicable programs, and receipts are provided for every session. See the fees page for full details.
What if I am in crisis?
Counselling is not an emergency service. If you or someone you care about is in crisis, please call the BC Crisis Line at 1-800-784-2433, or attend your nearest emergency room. If there is immediate danger, call 911.
Is there a sliding scale?
A limited number of sliding-scale spots may be available. If cost is a barrier, please ask when you reach out and we will do our best to find something workable.
How do we get started?
Send a message through the contact page or by email with a few words about what is going on. I will reply to arrange a first session or a brief conversation about whether counselling here is the right fit.
Still have a question?
Reach out with whatever is on your mind. There is no pressure, and you will get a warm, honest reply.
